ALEXANDER OBRAZUMOV. Un/Recyclable, 2019
Façade installation
Un/recyclable is a comment on the ambiguous nature of green rhetoric. Turning his attention to the three pillars of ecological mindfulness—the three Rs of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—Obrazumov shows how a message can change depending on the perspective. On their way to the Museum, visitors see a sign in the distance that reads “recyclable,” but as they approach the entrance the prefix “un” appears, changing the meaning of the word to its opposite. In the traditional of institutional critique, this message can be read as a comment on the Museum’s own green policy, but the artist is interested in the broader context.
